Chlorine dioxide is used primarily as a disinfectant in drinking water and also in various industrial processes. In drinking water applications, it is gaining popularity over chlorine, considering that it does not generate trihalomethanes when reacting with organic compounds. In industrial applications, it is used as a bleaching agent in such applications as pulp and paper. The HI96738 meter measures the chlorine dioxide content in water samples in the 0.00 - 2.00 milligrams per liter range. This meter uses an exclusive positive-locking system to ensure that the cuvette is in the same place every time it is placed into the measurement cell. Chlorine dioxide is a highly effective microbiocide that carries a number of important regulatory approvals from several international organizations including the US EPA, FDA and UK government for many of its uses. Chlorine and bromine react rapidly with microbiological species and chemicals in water. This reactivity is both their strength and weakness. Since chemical reactions are usually the first to take place, only the small residual of the product remaining after the chemical reaction is completed is available for microbiological control.
