The Brown & Sharpe gage block micrometer checking set includes a set of 10 gage blocks and two optical flats that are used to verify the measuring accuracy of micrometers with a 0 to 1" measuring range. Two optical flats have a 0.500" and 0.5125" diameter and are used to verify the flatness of anvil faces at half revolutions of the micrometer spindle. Grade 2 high-alloy steel gage blocks have a hardness of 800 HV (Vickers Pyramid Number) and are artificially aged to ensure stability. The gage blocks meet federal specification GGG-C-15c and MIL-STD-45662A, are individually inscribed with a serial number for identification, and include a Certificate of Calibration. Grade 2 gage blocks are commonly used as Working Standards in inspection rooms to set and calibrate measuring instruments and other equipment as well as to inspect tools, fixtures, and machines. Gage block sizes include 0.105", 0.210", 0.315", 0.420", 0.500", 0.605", 0.710", 0.815", 0.920", and 1.00". The gage block and optical flat set includes a fitted wooden box.

Gage blocks (also called gauge blocks, Jo blocks, Hoke blocks, and Johansson gauges) are precision ground and lapped metal or ceramic blocks, used for calibrating precision measuring equipment and as a length standard in manufacturing. Gage blocks are square or rectangular in shape, with flat and parallel measuring surfaces, and usually have an engraved unique serial number and nominal length (provided in either inches or millimeters). They often come in sets with blocks of varying lengths, so that many different standard lengths can be created by stacking and wringing them. Wringing is the process of sliding blocks together with a small amount of pressure, in order to create a longer gage block stack.

Brown & Sharpe manufactures precision measuring equipment and metrology hand tools. The company, founded in 1833, is headquartered in North Kingstown, RI.
