The Brown & Sharpe TESA RugoSurf20 06930013 portable handheld surface roughness gauge measures and displays fifteen different roughness parameters in mm or inch, as well as a roughness curve graph and bearing area curve, on a 2-inch LCD screen with an Z-axis measuring span of 400μm (15748 μ") and an X-axis measuring span of 16mm (0.63 inches). It also has a configurable number of cutoffs, a choice of three cutoff lengths, storage for 20 measurements with profile and graphs or 1000 measurements with parameters, and a micro-USB port and cable. The large 2" black-and-white LCD screen (160 x 100 pixels) displays fifteen different roughness parameters: roughness average (Ra), root mean squared (Rq), total height of profile (Rt), average peak to valley height (Rz), mean height of profile irregularities (Rc), mean width of profile elements (Rsm), lowest valley of the unfiltered profile (Pt), material ratio (Rmr), mean ratio of primary profile (Pmr), peak count (Rpc), peak count of profile (PPc), maximum roughness depth (Rmax), roughness profile (R), maximum roughness (Rx),and mean spacing of roughness motifs (AR). The gauge displays in a choice of ten languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Slovakian, Chinese, and Japanese. The gauge also displays graphs, such as roughness profile, and a bearing area curve (Abbott). The four-key tactile keyboard is rated IP 67 for protection against liquid and dust. A measurement delay feature provides a choice of six time delays to set a wait period between a measurement request and the measurement for use in hard-to-reach locations.

The gauge comes with the SB10 probe and a 90-degree diamond stylus tip (R = 5 μm) which is suitable for surfaces, bores, and shafts with a diameter greater than 10mm. The probe automatically returns to the measurement position after each measurement and comes with a cover. The micro-USB port allows for quick connection to a portable matrix printer (sold separately) or to a computer using a micro-USB standard cable (also sold separately). The gauge can be operated using AC power (adapter included) or with a rechargeable battery (also included), for increased mobility in the field, or when a power supply is hard to find, for up to eight hours. An auto power-off feature turns the gauge off after 1 minute of inactivity to extend battery life. The ergonomically shaped gauge can be used handheld or with the standalone vertical adjustment holders (of up to 35mm) or with any standard 8mm (0.315") diameter measurement stand with the positioning pin. The gauge also comes with a roughness standard (Ra = 2.97 μm/117 μ") for calibration and a plastic carrying case.

A surface roughness tester, also known as a surftest, roughness gauge, roughness gage, surface gage, surface finish gage, or surf roughness tester, is a device used to inspect and measure surface roughness of flats, rounds, sloping planes, and recesses in machined, ground, or polished metal and non-metal surfaces. It is used for metrology in shop, metalworking, manufacturing, and quality control (QC) applications. Surface roughness testing is a type of form measurement that identifies surface profiles such as grooves and recessions, commonly known as peaks and valleys, of a surface. A roughness tester traces a surface profile using a skid-type (contact-type) method with a tracer tip such as a diamond stylus and piezo-electric detection to calculate roughness. Common types of parameters include Ra (roughness average), Rv (maximum profile valley depth), and Rsk (skewness), and assessed profiles. Profiles can have valuations such as cutoff, sampling, traversing, and evaluation-types of lengths. A surface roughness tester can have analog or digital display. A surface roughness tester can be portable, handheld, or desktop-type.

Brown & Sharpe manufactures precision measuring equipment and metrology hand tools. The company, founded in 1833, is headquartered in North Kingstown, RI.
