The YSI 55 instrument is a handheld dissolved oxygen (DO) meter for field use, with a backlit LCD to enable reading in dark or dimly lit areas, and probe that is a non-detachable polarographic sensor, with a 12’ cable. The probe body has stainless steel to add durability and sinking weight. The meter has automatic temperature compensation, manual salinity compensation (0 to 40 ppt), and altitude compensation (0 to 10,000’). It runs on six AA alkaline batteries (included), is European Conformity (CE) compliant, and is water-resistant with Ingress Protection 65 (IP65). DO meters are commonly used in water-quality testing applications.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) meters measure the amount of dissolved oxygen present in water. The amount of DO helps to determine, for example, drinking water quality, the health of lakes or streams, and aquatic organism sustainability. A probe, also called a sensor or electrode, is inserted into the sample to perform the measurement, and the results appear on the meter display. Applications include sewage and water treatment plants, pollution control, fish farms, and various types of manufacturing.
