The AEMC 1050 digital megohmmeter is an auto-ranging insulation tester with a voltage safety check and five test voltages—50, 100, 250, 500, and 1,000V—for measuring insulation resistance to 4,000GΩ to indicate the condition of windings or cables in motors, switchgears, electrical installations, and other insulated equipment, and it also measures low-resistance to 400kΩ, capacitance to 5μF, and AC and DC voltage to 1,000V, disabling insulation testing when a voltage greater than 25V is detected. The R-DAR-PI (resistance-dielectric absorption rate-polarization index) function calculates and displays the DAR and the PI, which are measurements over time that give a truer indication of insulation condition than single-point measurements. The timer function allows timed testing from 1 to 59 minutes. High and low thresholds for insulation and resistance measurements can be set, triggering an alarm when readings fall outside the settings, and will be retained even after the meter is powered off. When measurement is complete, the meter enters voltage detection mode and automatically discharges residual voltage from the circuit under test. A memory function allows storage and recall of 20 readings. The meter can perform a continuity check up to 40Ω and buzzes to confirm that a circuit conducts electricity. Built into a double-insulated, dual-walled field case, the meter has a 4,000-count LCD with a backlight for visibility in low light. The display shows readings numerically and on a 31-segment bar graph. Megohmmeters are commonly used for electrical maintenance and testing in industries such as HVAC, transportation, manufacturing, mining, and utilities, among others.

This auto-ranging meter automatically selects the appropriate operating range for measurements. It is rated for category (CAT) III installations up to 600V, which covers energy-consuming equipment connected to a fixed installation, including household, office, and laboratory appliances. The unit automatically turns off after five minutes of non-use to conserve battery life and has a low-battery indicator that signals when the batteries need to be replaced. It comes with a set of test leads, a set of alligator clips, a test probe, eight 1.5V C batteries, fuses, a detachable accessory pouch, and instructions. For remote operation, the meter has an input for connecting an AEMC 2118.97 remote test probe (sold separately).

Megohmmeters, also called insulation testers, are electrical test meters that measure resistance to the flow of current in an electrical component or circuit and check the continuity of an electrical circuit to detect electrical problems such as degraded insulation and improper circuit connections in equipment, wiring, and power supplies. Resistance is an indicator of the overall condition of the device being tested. Megohmmeters have an internal power supply, such as a battery or a capacitor, which supplies a test voltage to a circuit or component that is turned off. Test leads are connected in a series to the tester and the circuit or device being tested. The meter calculates the difference in voltage between the leads and measures the resistance. Most megohmmeters have two terminals for test lead attachment. The two-terminal, or two-wire, measurement method includes the resistance of the circuit or device being tested and the resistance of the test leads, and generally provides sufficient accuracy for measuring large values of resistance in insulation testing applications.

AEMC Instruments manufactures electrical testing and measurement instruments, including clamp meters, power quality analyzers, ground resistance testers, and data loggers. The company, founded in 1893, is headquartered in Foxborough, MA.
