The Ohaus AV53N Adventurer Pro conventional, or precision, balance has a capacity of 51g and an accuracy of 0.02g (also called readability), and is NTEP (National Type Evaluation Program) certified for us in legal-for-trade weighing applications. The high-contrast, backlit LCD displays results on two lines for simultaneous viewing of weight results and application-specific information, as well as basic on-screen prompts for setting up and using the balance. This balance has an external, digital calibration system that requires a 50g calibration mass (sold separately), which ensures accurate measurements. The rear-facing RS232 port is positioned for easy connection to a printer or computer, enabling work in compliance with GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) traceability requirements.

The balance weighs in seven common weighing units, and tares over the entire weighing range. Application modes include animal weighing, parts counting, percent weighing, check weighing, totalization, and display hold for oversized samples, and the built-in, below-balance weighing hook suspends samples beneath the balance for measuring specific gravity and density. Three selectable settings adjust the sensitivity of the balance to compensate for excessive vibration, airflow, and other environmental disturbances, and the base of the balance has four adjustable feet to ensure weighing stability. An integrated security slot for locks and cables protects the balance from unauthorized use or theft. The ABS plastic and die-cast metal housing safeguards the internal weighing cell from environmental influences and impact, and a replaceable in-use cover protects the display from spills. The stainless steel weighing pan resists corrosion from spills of most sample materials, and the round glass draft shield is dishwasher-safe and autoclaveable. This balance is manufactured to ISO 9001:2000 standards, and when used according to manufacturer’s recommendations, is covered by a two-year warranty against defects in workmanship or materials.

Balances are measuring instruments used to determine the mass of an object, while scales are used to measure the weight of an object. The measurement results from balances are generally considered to be more precise compared to results from scales. Mechanical balances are the simplest type of balance, and use a lever and slide to indicate the measurement. Conventional balances are commonly used in offices, the jewelry industry, and in kitchens, and display results digitally, but are less precise than analytical balances. Analytical balances measure to a high degree of precision and accuracy (0.0001g or better), and display results digitally. These balances have a cover with doors to prevent dust and airflow from affecting the measurement. Moisture balances analyze moisture content in a material sample, using infrared or halogen heat sources to dry the sample and then calculate the moisture content from the before- and after-drying weight, and display results digitally, on the balance, or transfer the information for display on a computer.

Ohaus manufactures scales and balances for laboratory, educational, retail, food, and jewelry applications. The company, which was founded in 1914, is headquartered in Parsippany, NJ.
