This hydrometer is used to measure the specific gravity (relative density) for heavy liquids measuring in range from 1.000 to 2.000 in .01 divisions. The hydrometer is made of a chemically resistant glass and consists of a cylinder shaped stem and a bulb weighted with a substance to make it float upright. The overall hydrometer length is approximately 30 cm. Great for STEM science education and classroom demonstrations. Includes plastic storage tube. The hydrometer requires a hydrometer jar (not included). The hydrometer is designed to be placed into the liquid filled jar, and the point at which the surface of the liquid touches the stem correlates to the specific gravity. When a hydrometer is placed in low-density liquid such as kerosene, gasoline or alcohol, the hydrometer will sink deeper. When a hydrometer is placed in high-density liquid such as brine, milk or acid, it doesn't sink so far. Therefore, for ease of measurement, it is usual to have two separate instruments, one for heavy liquids on which the mark 1.000 is near the top of the stem, and one for light liquids on which the mark 1.000 is near the bottom.
