The Starrett 795M/796M series LCD outside micrometer has a digital single-value LCD readout that displays in inch and metric units with resolution to 0.00005” (0.001mm) for outside diameter (OD) measurement, and a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise measurements. The micrometer has an Ingress Protection 67 (IP67) rating, which means that components are resistant to debris and to submersion in liquid under standard conditions for up to 30 minutes.

The micrometer’s electronic microprocessor can preset, hold, or limit measurement at any position, as well as set a temporary zero position and return to a true zero reading. An automatic off function helps preserve battery life when the unit is not in use. Depending on the model, it may have Statistical Process Control (SPC) data output to transmit results to a computer or external device through an interface cable (sold separately). The micrometer’s frame has a black wrinkle finish that helps resist rust and reduce glare. A friction thimble mechanism helps provide uniform pressure for precise, repeatable measurement. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve has a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The spindle and anvil have flat, micro-lapped measuring face for accuracy and are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. A knurled ring-type lock nut helps provide secure locking of the measurement position. The micrometer includes, and is powered by, a single CR2032 lithium cell battery.

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot. Micrometer heads are for mounting in fixtures, where they are typically used for measurement, or as stops or feeds.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.
