The Hanna Instruments HI 991003 is a waterproof, portable pH, pH-mV, oxygen reduction potential (ORP)/mV, and temperature meter used in water treatment applications with Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC), automatic calibration at one or two points, a multilevel LCD screen, a pre-amplified pH/ORP probe with internal temperature sensor, and a battery error prevention system. A pH meter is commonly used to measure the pH of substance such as water, food, beer, or wine in laboratory, industrial, and food applications. An ORP meter, also known as a redox potential tester, measures the oxidization or reduction capacity of a solution, and monitors chemical reactions and ion activity. The multilevel LCD screen simultaneously displays the current measurement, the current temperature, and tutorial messages. This meter has ATC from -5.0 to 105.0 degrees C (23.0 to 221.0 degrees F) for accurate readings in fluctuating temperatures. The meter also has automatic one-or two-point calibration with two sets of memorized buffers: standard (4.01, 7.01, and 10.01) or National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) (4.01, 6.86, and 9.18).

The meter comes with the HI 1297D pre-amplified pH/ORP electrode with internal temperature sensor, titanium cage body, single cloth-junction to reduce contamination, gel electrolyte for fast response, 7-pin Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) connector for a tight cable connection, and 1 m (3.3') cable. The meter uses three 1.5V AAA batteries (included) for up to 1200 hours of continuous operation and can be set to turn off automatically after eight minutes of non-use to extend battery life. The battery error prevention system alerts when battery power is low and displays battery percentage on startup. The operating temperature is from 0 to 50 degrees C (32 to 122 degrees F) with a relative humidity of 100 percent. The dimensions are 152 x 58 x 30mm/6.0 x 2.3 x 1.2 inches (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) The meter weighs 205g/7.2oz.The HI 991003 portable meter also comes with buffer solution sachets, electrode cleaning sachets, a carrying case, and instructions.

A pH meter, also called a sensor or tester, is a device used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. A pH meter has either a portable or a benchtop body. Many portable meters are handheld devices. Some testers have an internal sensor, and may have a tip and body that fit inside of a container for measurement. A meter is commonly used in many different environments from laboratories to field research and manufacturing facilities. Researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists use a pH meter in aquaculture, agricultural, wine-making, and water-testing, and for scientific applications. Some pH meters may measure additional parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity (also called electro-conductivity or EC), temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, resistivity, or oxygen reduction potential (ORP)/mV.

Hanna Instruments manufactures analytical instrumentation and supplies, including pH meters, electrodes, chemical reagents, and buffer solutions. The company, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.
