This Direct Reading Specific Gravity Balance is Mineralab's assembly-ready version of Dr. Hanneman's design. What makes the Hanneman Balance special is its Direct Reading feature, i.e. no calculations, worksheets, or math are required - just read the Specific Gravity value that is printed directly on the Beam where the Counterweight assembly rests. Specific Gravity is a very indicative property for a Gem or Mineral, so that measuring for it will substantially narrow down your list of candidates in an effort to identify your unknown stone. |

This balance was originally designed for measuring SG of Gemstones, and it should be good for Gems down to about 3/4 ct, perhaps less. On the high end, the Balance will accept minerals and other samples up to about 30g in weight.

To use the Balance, add Water to Beaker, zero out the Beam, add your Gem to the Upper Weighing Pan. The Beam tilts down left, so add the Counterweight(s) Holder as needed to opposite end of Beam until it returns to 0 position. Then place the Gem in Underwater Pan, which causes the Beam to tilt up left. Then lift and slide Counterweight assembly left along Beam until pointer returns to 0. Then just read the corresponding SG value that is printed directly on the Beam. You're done!

The Beam is printed with the SG values ranging from 1.00 on the left, to 25.00 on the right, which covers the SG range of all known Solids, except for those that float on Water. A recent enhancement to the printed Beam also lists the names of representative Gems and Minerals, listed immediately below their approximate, respective SG values.
