The Starrett SR200 surface roughness tester is a portable or bench mounted device with contact operation used to measure and display ten surface roughness parameters, has an LCD screen, a stylus lift mechanism, a variable traverse length, an RS-232 port for data export, and stores up to 100 readings. The 2 x 3.25-inch/5 x 8.25cm (H x W) multi-line LCD screen displays roughness average (Ra), average peak to valley height (Rz), maximum profile peak height (Rp), total height of profile (Rt), material ratio (Rmr), peak count (Rpc), mean width of profile elements (Rsm), maximum peak to valley height (Rz1max), skewness (Rsk), and arithmetic mean slope (Rda). The filter used can be switched between 2CR and Gaussian. The stylus lift mechanism allows a vertical adjustment of 2"/50mm and rotation of the interchangeable pickup to different positions, including right angle or inverted, to measure features such as steps, large and narrow bores, grooves, and lands. The traverse length is adjustable from 0.010 to 1"/0.25 to 25mm. The pickup is inductive and has a range of 0.012μ"/300μm with a resolution of 0.04μ/0.01μm and an accuracy of 2% of reading + LSD μm. The force is 0.005 to 0.01oz./150 to 300mg. The diamond stylus has a tip radius of 200μ"/5μm. The operating temperature is 41 to 104 degrees F/5 to 40 degrees C with a maximum relative humidity of 80%. Storage temperatures are 32 to 122 degrees F/0 to 50 degrees C with a maximum relative humidity of 80%. The tester dimensions are 2.4 x 5 x 3.35 x inches/60 x 127 x 85mm (H x W x D) and the unit weighs 1lb/450gm. (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.)

The tester has an RS-232 port and 3'/0.91m cable to connect with a PC. The SR200 also comes with TalyProfile Lite software for Windows. After receiving data from the SR200, TalyProfile Lite can analyze, print, export as a .txt or .csv file, or save the data as a document that can be reopened and used as a template for future measurements. Graphics capability takes the basic measurements and creates a report. An analysis feature allows profiles to be leveled and zoomed to remove unwanted features or defects from the analysis. Distance measurement between features and areas of a profile, step height, and area of a hole and peak can be displayed both graphically and numerically. A sequence of analysis functions can be saved as a template and applied to future measurements. Graphs, profiles, and results can be arranged and printed within TalyProfile Lite or exported to other presentation software. The tester also comes with a standard pickup with diamond stylus, calibration standard, instructions, and a hard-sided carrying case with foam inserts to cushion the instrument.

A surface roughness tester, also known as a profilometer, surftest, roughness gauge, roughness gage, surface gage, surface finish gage, or surf roughness tester, is a device used to inspect and measure surface roughness of flats, rounds, sloping planes, and recesses in machined, ground, or polished metal and non-metal surfaces. It is used for metrology in shop, metalworking, manufacturing, and quality control (QC) applications. Surface roughness testing is a type of form measurement that identifies surface profiles such as grooves and recessions, commonly known as peaks and valleys, of a surface. A roughness tester traces a surface profile using a skid-type (contact-type) method with a tracer tip such as a diamond stylus and piezo-electric detection to calculate roughness. Common types of parameters include Ra (roughness average), Rv (maximum profile valley depth), and Rsk (skewness), and assessed profiles. Profiles can have valuations such as cutoff, sampling, traversing, and evaluation-types of lengths. A surface roughness tester can have analog or digital display. A surface roughness tester can be portable, handheld, or desktop-type.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.
