The Fowler 52-245 series indicating micrometer with a balanced dial has a flat anvil/spindle pair, a 0.020" measuring range, and 0.00005" graduations and is designed for use as a comparator or Go/No Go (Go/NG) gauge for comparing parts with tight tolerances. The balanced dial has 0.00005" dial graduations and an accuracy of 0.00015". The Vernier scale has 0.001" graduations for precise measurements and wide microfine graduations for ease of reading. After setting the micrometer, the spindle can be locked in place and tolerance indicators set to allow operators to observe at a glance if workpieces fall within tolerance levels, and the zero adjustment on the sleeve ensures accurate measurements. A retracting button close to the operator's hand retracts the anvil 0.060" for quick release and placement of workpieces. Hardened, precision-ground, and carbide-tipped measuring faces are micro-lapped to provide wear resistance and accuracy. All parts subject to wear are hardened for long life and durability. The frame is heat-insulated to provide durability, long life, and resistance to temperature-related expansion and contraction. The micrometer includes a wrench and fitted case. Micrometers 2" and above include a standard.

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.

The Fred V. Fowler Company manufactures inspection and measurement instruments such as electronic indicators, calipers, bore gages, and digital scales. The company, founded in 1946, is headquartered in Newton, MA.
