The Thermo Scientific Orion Star A216 benchtop meter displays pH and dissolved oxygen readings plus temperature on the large, backlit LCD display for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) analysis, wine and beer testing, and water and waste water analysis. The meter can display temperature with pH/mV/RmV results, dissolved oxygen (DO) in percent saturation, concentration results with temperature, or all results at once. Electrode status, time, date, sample ID, user ID, and calibration points are also displayed with the measurements. The meter is designed for ease of use and reduced training requirements, with clear screen prompts, updateable soft keys, and an interface that supports English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Chinese. A pre-programmed auto-read function is available to lock stable readings on the screen, with an indicator alert that signals when the reading is stable. The meter can also be set for timed readings that gather data at specific time intervals. Non-volatile memory holds up to 2,000 data points with time and date stamp. Updates for meter software and complimentary data analysis software are available for download.

DO results are enhanced with automatic temperature, manual salinity, and automatic or manual barometric pressure compensation. DO calibration can use water-saturated air, air-saturated water, a Winkler titration, or zero point calibration. The DO probe provides 90 percent of final value in 10 seconds, 95 percent in 15 seconds, and 99 percent of final value in 60 seconds, with 10 cm/sec minimum sample flow. The probe has Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) and a screw-on membrane cap to simplify assembly and reduce probe servicing time. The DO probe has a Mini-DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) connector and 1.5m/4.9ft. cable.

The meter has an IP 54 rating for limited ingress of dust and protection against water splashes. The device can be wall-mounted if table space is an issue. The electrode arm (included) can be attached to either side of the instrument. Meter input ports include Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC), reference pin, 8-Pin Mini-DIN, 9-Pin Mini-DIN, and stirrer port. Output ports include RS-232 and USB. Certifications for this meter include CE, TÃœV, and FCC Class A limits.

A multiparameter meter is a benchtop or handheld device that can take multiple readings on a single sample. It measures parameters such as the pH level (acidity or alkalinity of a substance), conductivity (the amount of salts or other compounds present in water), dissolved oxygen (DO, the amount of oxygen in a liquid), temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS, anything present in water other than the pure water molecule and suspended solids), salinity, resistivity, and oxidation reduction potential (ORP). Applications for multiparameter meters include water testing, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, winemaking, water-treatment plants, and acquaculture. Devices with a benchtop body are often used for indoor laboratory use or in a manufacturing setting; handheld, portable devices are typically used for fieldwork. Sensors are used with a meter to measure the parameters of a substance.

Thermo Fisher Scientific manufactures analytical instruments, laboratory equipment, consumables, and software under the Thermo Scientific and Fisher Scientific brands, among others. The company was founded in 2006 and is headquartered in Waltham, MA.
