The Biochrom WPA 80-3003-50 Model S800 Spectrawave visible-light spectrophotometer has a 330 to 800nm wavelength range, a 7nm spectral bandwidth, and a tungsten lamp, and is used in teaching laboratories to provide students with hands-on experience in spectrophotometry. The instrument measures absorbance, percent transmission, and concentration, and outputs absorbance-time plots directly to chart recorder or computer (sold separately). The 7nm bandwidth is used for routine quality control measurements when high resolution is not required. The instrument accepts 10mm glass or plastic cuvettes. The cell holder can be removed to ease cleaning. The LCD displays test results directly on the instrument. The instructions include simple experiments for standard curve construction, stray light measurement, and the determination of λ max, extinction coefficient, and natural bandwidth. The Windows-compatible Grafico PC utility software package allows students to capture, print, and interpret results, including wavelength scans and data export to spreadsheet software. The software includes an educational tutorial on UV/Visible spectrophotometry.

A spectrophotometer is a device used to measure and analyze aspects of light absorption in liquids and solids. Readings are displayed in digital or analog format. A spectrophotometer can have a handheld body for field use, or a bench-top body for laboratory applications. It may have one or more adapters to enable it to measure surfaces or liquids. A spectrophotometer is used for testing and measuring in anatomy, chemistry, agriculture, process plant, food and beverage making, homeland security, and educational applications.
