Potassium iodate starch paper is a filter paper impregnated with potassium iodate (KIO 3 ) and starch, which is used for the detection of sulphurous acid (H 2 SO 3 ) and alkali sulphites. The stoichiometry of the reaction is as follows:2 IO 3 û + 5 SO 3 2û + 2 H + « 5 SO 4 2û + I 2 + H 2 OThe sulphurous acid reduces potassium iodate to form elemental iodine which reacts with the starch in known manner to a blue-violet complex. Thus the white potassium iodate starch paper turns blue-violet in the presence of H 2 SO 3 .Limit of sensitivity: 5 mg/l SO 2Recommended application: detection of sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ) in the chemical laboratory, testing of meat products suspected of containing added sulphite.Note: For the detection of sulphite in meat products, also refer to our Sulphite test paper.
  • Gradation: 5 mg/L SO2

  • Reel of 5 m length
