The AEMC 5060 digital megohmmeter with RS-232 interface is an insulation tester with four preset test voltages—500, 1,000, 2,500, and 5,000V—as well as user-adjustable test voltages from 40 to 5,100V for measuring insulation resistance to 10TΩ to indicate the condition of windings or cables in motors, switchgears, electrical installations, and other insulated equipment, and it also measures capacitance to 50μF, leakage current to 3 milliamperes (mA), and AC and DC voltage to 1,000V, indicating when a voltage greater than 25V is detected. The meter can be adjusted to inhibit testing when a voltage of 3, 10, or 20% of test voltage is detected. The R-DAR-PI–DD (resistance-dielectric absorption rate-polarization index-dielectric discharge) function calculates and displays the DAR and the PI, which are resistance measurements over time, and DD, which detects excess discharge current, to provide a detailed indication of insulation condition. The timer function allows timed testing from 1 to 60 minutes. High and low thresholds for insulation and resistance measurements can be set, triggering an alarm when readings fall outside the settings, and will be retained even after the meter is powered off. When measurement is complete, the meter enters voltage detection mode and automatically discharges residual voltage from the circuit under test. For improved accuracy during high-resistance testing, the guard terminal eliminates interference from leakage current. With its RS-232 interface and software, the meter can be used with a PC for configuring the meter, storing and analyzing data, and generating reports. Its document function allows printing of a preformatted report directly to a compatible printer. It has 128kB of memory for storing readings. Built into a double-insulated, dual-walled field case, the meter has a dual 4,000-count LCD with a backlight for visibility in low light. The display shows readings numerically and on a 33-segment bar graph. Insulations meters are commonly used for electrical maintenance and testing in industries such as HVAC, transportation, manufacturing, mining, and utilities, among others.

The meter is rated for category (CAT) III installations to 1,000V, which covers equipment in fixed installations, such as switches in the fixed installation and some industrial equipment that is permanently connected to the fixed installation, and CAT I installations to 2,500V, which covers most protected electronic equipment, such as small household appliances. It automatically turns off after five minutes of non-use to conserve battery life and has a low-battery indicator that signals when the batteries need to be recharged. It comes with a set of test leads with integrated 5,000V rated hippo clips, a jumper lead for the guard terminal, a 6ft. modem cable, a rechargeable NiMH battery pack, a 120V power cord, a soft carrying case for accessories, and instructions.

Megohmmeters, also called insulation testers, are electrical test meters that measure resistance to the flow of current in an electrical component or circuit and check the continuity of an electrical circuit to detect electrical problems such as degraded insulation and improper circuit connections in equipment, wiring, and power supplies. Resistance is an indicator of the overall condition of the device being tested. Megohmmeters have an internal power supply, such as a battery or a capacitor, which supplies a test voltage to a circuit or component that is turned off. Test leads are connected in a series to the tester and the circuit or device being tested. The meter calculates the difference in voltage between the leads and measures the resistance. Most megohmmeters have two terminals for test lead attachment. The two-terminal, or two-wire, measurement method includes the resistance of the circuit or device being tested and the resistance of the test leads, and generally provides sufficient accuracy for measuring large values of resistance in insulation testing applications.

AEMC Instruments manufactures electrical testing and measurement instruments, including clamp meters, power quality analyzers, ground resistance testers, and data loggers. The company, founded in 1893, is headquartered in Foxborough, MA.
