The Fowler 54-815 series digital outside micrometer has a flat anvil/spindle pair, a choice of measuring range, an LCD with an inch/metric switchable resolution, and is designed for general purpose measuring. A switchable resolution of 0.00005" and 0.001mm, and an accuracy of 0.00016" provide precise readings and accurate measurements. Carbide measuring faces provide wear resistance. The ratchet-stop thimble provides an audible sound and stops turning when the spindle comes into contact with the workpiece, providing constant force for consistent measurements between operators. The steel construction housing provides durability and is Ingress Protection (IP) certified IP54 for protection against dust and water. The LCD has a hold feature that saves the reading for recording and can be set to zero at any spindle location. The micrometer can be set to take absolute or incremental measurements. Absolute measurements provide the total dimension of the workpiece. Incremental measurements provide a reading that shows the difference between a set standard and workpiece being measured. This type of reading is often used to determine if a workpiece falls within tolerance levels. A built-in clock logs the time measurements are taken and an automatic shut-off feature extends battery life. RS-232 output transfers data to a computer (cable not included). The micrometer requires a Type 357 battery (included), and includes a wrench and a fitted case. Micrometers 2" and above include a standard. The Mitutoyo 118 series sheet metal micrometer has a deep-throated frame for measuring thickness of sheet metal, paper, plastic, or rubber parts, and a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements. A ratchet-stop mechanism helps provide uniform pressure for precise, repeatable measurement. The micrometer’s frame has a baked enamel finish for protection and durability. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.001†or 0.0001â€, depending on the model, with a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The measuring faces are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. A spindle lock helps provide secure locking of the measurement position. The micrometer comes with a plastic case for storage.Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.
