The Fowler Premium Depth Micrometers have a measurement range of 0 to 3" or 0 to 4", a base of 2.5" or 4", and a resolution (or smallest graduation interval) of 0.001", with + or – 0.0003" of accuracy. The vernier scale of microfine graduations on satin chrome finish provides precise, readable measurements. Depending on the range of the model, the gauges include either three or four 1" long/0.176" diameter measuring rods. The rods are interchangeable and are fitted to the gauge spindle against a positive stop and then locked for accuracy and stability. The bases are 2.5"long, and the rods and threads are ground, hardened, and lapped for durability and accuracy. They come with a spanner wrench and hardened case. The gauges conform to Federal Accuracy specifications. Depth gauges are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. Depth gauges are precision measuring instruments used to determine the depth of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot. These gauges often take the form of sliders that travel on a measuring beam or rods, are moved to position by hand, and then adjusted with a calibrated screw. The base of the gauge rests at the top of the shape whose recession is to be measured, while the beam or rods extend to the bottom of the recession to determine the measurement. Gauge position is read from a graduated scale, dial, counters, or an electronic display. The Fred V. Fowler Company manufactures inspection and measurement instruments such as electronic indicators, calipers, bore gages, and digital scales. The company, founded in 1946, is headquartered in Newton, MA.

Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. The Mitutoyo 295 series spherical face micrometer has a spherical anvil and a flat or spherical spindle face, depending on the model, for measuring the thickness of tubing walls, and a mechanical digit counter for ease of reading to 0.01mm. It also has a vernier scale in metric units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements and a ratchet-stop mechanism to help provide uniform pressure for precise, repeatable measurement during adjustment. The micrometer’s frame has a baked enamel finish for protection and durability. The spindle and anvil are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. The Fowler 54-860 series digital outside micrometer has a ball anvil and flat spindle pair, a choice of measuring range, and an LCD with an inch/metric switchable resolution for measuring the inside diameter of sleeves, collars, tubing, and other curved and cylindrical surfaces. The ball anvil contacts the inside curve at a single point, providing accurate measurements. Carbide measuring faces provide wear resistance. A switchable resolution of 0.00005" and 0.001mm, and an accuracy of 0.00016"/0.004mm on 1 to 2" micrometers provide precise readings and accurate measurements. A friction thimble provides smooth and quiet operations, and is suitable for one-handed operation. Friction-style thimbles stop turning when the spindle comes into contact with the workpiece, providing constant force for consistent measurements between operators. The insulated steel housing provides durability and is Ingress Protection (IP) certified IP54 for protection against dust and water. The LCD has a hold feature that saves the reading for recording. The micrometer can be set to take absolute or incremental measurements. Absolute measurements provide the total dimension of the workpiece. Incremental measurements provide a reading that shows the difference between a set standard and workpiece being measured. This type of reading is often used to determine if a workpiece falls within tolerance levels. RS-232 output transfers data to a computer (cable not included). The micrometer requires a Type 357 battery (included), and includes a fitted case. Micrometers 2" and above include a standard.
